Wow, this edition of IGN is really loaded! There are some extremely important stories here, though, so, I hope you will all take the time to look them over.
One thing before beginning, however: in order to keep things clear, I've begun referring to this periodical exclusively as "The Inter-Georgist News," since "The Georgist News Service," is actually supposed to be something else. The IGN is primarily meant to provide Georgists around the world with news of other members of our movement and what they're doing, whereas GNS is meant to provide articles by Georgist journalists to mainstream and alternative news outlets.
"Cheers" to everyone at the big Georgist Conference in Portland!

Two reports from IGN correspondent, Jeffery J. Smith -
It's my own horn, but just one little toot. At The World Futurist Conference in Chicago, there was a little press coverage, a radio reporter/news director. Out of the several dozen talks simultaneously, which did he choose to record for future broadcast? The one titled "Geonomics". What did he say about the presentation? I quote: "That talk was the most exciting I've heard at the entire conference." In real estate, it's location. But in marketing, it's packaging.
Sue, Bob, Chuck and all Chicago geoists, please, call Bill Steele, WZRD, 773/583-4050x3817. Get him and the rest of the Fourth Estate involved. (Alan Ridley can handle the Fifth Column.)
And I nominate Hanno Beck for Pope if not UN Secretary General.
(Agreed! Great geoing, Jeffery! - Ed.)

Another of Hanno's excellent website projects, The Banneker Center, is attempting to build a directory of extremely worthwhile WWW sites. He's calling it, "Geode - Precious Gems Inside." He'd like for you to check that out, as well, and add your favorite WWW sites to the list. (The URL is http://www.progress.org/geode )

Also, the on-line stadium subsidy conference they sponsor, Virtual Bleachers, will now be held on the first Wednesday of each month from 4-10 PM EST. So the next date is coming up soon: Wednesday, August 5th. If you'd like to participate, send an e-mail to Neil deMause (firstname.lastname@example.org) with your name and password requests so you can log on.
Sue Walton has agreed to report on the proceedings of the recent conference of The Council of Georgist Organizations for the next edition of The Inter-Georgist News!
An important Georgist newslist put out by The Progress Report, entitled, "Economic Justice Update" recently made the following supplication: "Corporate Welfare for the Big Banks" Will we give $18 billion in handouts to the IMF (International Monetary Fund)? The final showdown vote in the House of Representatives has not yet occurred. Please contact your representative to find out their opinion on the $18 billion handout, and either urge him/her to oppose it, or thank them if they already oppose it. But note - although the Senate resumes business on July 6, the House is still on July 4th recess all the way until the 13th. And for more information on the IMF bailout issue, look near the foot of the Progress Report Archive at www.progress.org/archive
(Editor's note: If you aren't on the list to receive the Economic Justice Update electronic newslist, you should be. It doesn't come out that often, but, when it does, the information therein is usually very important. It's free and it's compiled by Hanno Beck, so get on it by sending an e-mail message to email@example.com )
I had already begun listing the e-mail addresses of US newspapers and magazines, to which I had intended to send articles I had written for The Progress Report. Recalling my experience at *IN* magazine, about which many of you may have read in the most recent *Georgist Journal*, published by The Henry George Institute (http://www.henrygeorge.org), I realized that I had the beginnings of a Georgist version of a newswire like AP or UPI, the excellent possibilities of which, Tim Plamondon, then Associate Publisher of *IN* magazine, and I had discussed after it became apparent that the Georgist Movement was rife with brilliant writers, whose literatue and perspectives deserve a much more widespread audience.
It seemed to me that, not only for the purposes of making the following supplication, but for the enlistment of participation from Georgist writers and publications in The Georgist News Service, The Inter-Georgist News would be invaluable. Considering the idea further, I realized that there might be many other benefits to our movement and its members from this venture, especially for inspiration, mutual cooperation and development of our familial current. In keeping with the promotion of these aspects, I humbly submit to you all the following, the desire which was the seedling for my endeavor into this project.
The Georgist Movement is extremely lucky to be able to call one of our own such a great man as John McConnell, founder of "Earth Day."
We are far too often accused (albeit unfairly) of advocating a reform which does not respect environmental concerns, but the fact that Mr. McConnell is and has always been an ardent Georgist and that on his well-maintained website (http://www.earthsite.org), he unqualifiably recommends equal access to and ownership of natural resource are two of the many firm indications that what we advocate is of all possible reforms, the most environmentally sound.
Furthermore, since it should be obvious, especially to Georgists, that his continual, repeated, vocal advocacy of our equal right to land is the primary reason for the vast political and moneyed forces behind the obfuscation and co-opting of his ingenious event by organizers of the April 22 version of "Earth Day," his promotion should be considered not only a responsibility, but a right, in that he is our movement's number one living poster child for the public marginalization of Georgist reform by landed interests, especially so called "news" organizations.
Then, there is the fact that despite being a dyed-in-the-wool Georgist, John McConnell is a world-renowned celebrity, who, every year on the Vernal Equinox, meets with world leaders at The United Nations Building in a simultaneously observed world-wide event to recognize the one and only original "Earth Day" and to promote observation of the essential nature of this planet's ecosystem. John McConnell, for example, is the only Georgist who can call himself a personal friend of The Dalai Lama.
To me, these facts indicate something special about this man, something of which Georgists should take greater notice and to which we should pay greater respect. So, for these reasons and many others including the power and inspiration of his words and the honor, humility and genius of his character, I feel that every Georgist website should become an "Official Earth Trustee Site." What this entails is the addition to your site the "Official Earth Trustee Site" logo, which should be made a link to http://www.earthsite.org . I have this logo in a "TIF" file, which I will be very happy to send you. You will also be able to retrieve it from the site of The Inter-Georgist News (http://www.kroyer.com/gns).
I think the addition of this logo to all or, at least, a great many Georgist websites would be a wonderfully unifying factor for the Georgist presence on the web, an unassailable indication of the environmental concern inherent to the reform we recommend and an appropriate tribute to the life-long persistence and action- oriented pursuit of economic and ecological justice by this esteemed octogenarian visionary and modern-day hero of the Georgist Movement, John McConnell, the undisputed "Dean of Green." He needs our help, we need his and, most of all, Earth and its people desperately need what our cooperation might be able to offer. I beseech you all: let's do this.

Bruce Babbitt, US Secretary of the Interior, held a press conference, broadcast on C-SPAN, Thursday, July 24, regarding a proposed "Interior Spending Bill." Congress intends to cut appropriations to fund the ESA & Land Acquisition programs. Here are some of Mr. Babbitt's comments:
Six riders to the bill concerning Alaska, he described as the "baking of Alaska."
"These bills...contain massive assault on the US Forest Service."
"Congress is sneaking in this stuff right and left to give our forests over to the timber companies..."
"These are insidious provisions..."
"The oil industry has the audacity to ask for collusive oil pricing."
On The Bureau of Indian Affairs: "Facilities are falling to pieces. Budget appropriations are cut back..this is shameful..we are sending our kids to such squalor."
"I'm here saying this to meet my trust to raise these issues..I tried like hell to work with this Congress....The leadership of this Congress is to blame...This leadership has decided Natural Resources, American Indians and the environment programs will be starved out...This Congress does not care about our environment or cultural or historical treasures."
Following are responses to Babbitt's comments by Frank Regula (Chairman of the Subcommittee on Appropriation):
"It's partisan rubbish." "We put controls on this administration so they can't throw money away." "They don't like constraints..we're going to tell this administration how to spend the money."
"We will enable people to enjoy the crown jewels of this park. We took care of the Indians."
Time to get those letters and phone calls to Congress and relentless peer pressure to friends & family to write and protest or we can start kissing the national parks and forests good-bye.
(Quite a worthy supplication. Thank you very much for this, Ms. Kaczorowski.
from IGN correspondent, Bruno Moser -
Have you ever been to NEULAND? Well, hopefully, one day.
NEULAND is a nonprofit organization I pulled into life 17 months ago to promote the single tax and to make my people aware of this existing solution. The taxmafia thought my organization political, so I gave up on being Mr. Nice Guy and now call the whole thing a r-evolution.
Switzerland got with Wilhelm Tell and some other 'antsisters' some good characters to fight the taxlords and to talk about the land. I don't fight, because I would lose if I did. I simply ridicule the system constantly, show it's absurdities and bring joy and happiness to the people in the streets through my Haflinger Truck.
On August 15th I have a Freedom Festival planned on the Bundesplatz and need either/and/or for the Swiss to realize that they are born free, Sting and the Stones to see that this is the event at which they want to be or $5 million, so I can set up the whole thing easily. There is a minimum agenda, too. That is: me and my truck and a little transistor radio. I'm open to whatever comes.
The nice thing about Switzerland is... it's small and easy to overlook. So when I parked right on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich (LVT about $500 a month), I had tons of people from everywhere gazing at my truck. I heard people saying, "Oh, I saw you in Bern, in Basel, in Baden, in...(wherever I met people before, but never expected to meet them in Zurich)."
Then, I had at least 50,000 people a day passing by on the tram. Their eyes almost popped out when they caught sight of my NEULAND truck.
I couldn't get much media attention. They don't understand my r-evolution. But, hey, there was a TV team from Venezuela! They filmed and made an interview. What more could one ask for than to promote the cause in South America?
Also, Zurich has an event this summer with about 1,000 full size and nicely decorated polyester cows. The motto is: Land in Sight. And, again, there I was with NEULAND right in-between those cows.
A special pleasure was to conquer the Paradeplatz (Center of Banks and Plush). Zillions stopped at my truck and took leaflets and brochures. I videotaped it from up above, from a window in a five star hotel. I could not believe my eyes. But on fast-forward, it looks absolutely amazing, like an antpit.
So the r-evolution goes well. Keep your fingers crossed and send me some more inspiring thoughts in a spare second of yours.

"Keep 'em coming, and many thanks. I'm finding the news service very useful and even inspirational. With the desert of LVT-oriented news out there, it is nice to get a little cheerleading every once in awhile. I hope to hone my journalism skills, swallow my fears and frustrations, and get cracking with a few magazine and newspaper pieces." - Bill Gentes
I have assembled tons of contact information for US newspapers and magazines and it appears I will be able to make a website available for journalists to access the articles and statistics we'll be putting together. This website, though, will be in addition to, and not a replacement of the e-mail we'll be sending journalists on a regular basis. It will be a little time yet before The Georgist News Service is full- blown, but progress is definitely being made!
Please, stay in touch!
