The Georgist News #3
Greetings, Eco-Justice Advocates,
Again, thanks to the assistance of many magnanimous comrades, The Georgist
News Service is making progress in our ability to better serve the movement
through The Inter-Georgist News http://www.kroyer.com/gns/
This time, our thanks go out to Robin Robertson, Harry Payne, Ben Sevack and Neil deMause for their comments and suggestions on the format and technical proceedings of this electronic periodical.
Since many non-AOL members of our movement do not receive the same layout
enhancements I am using (with AOL), an additional recipient list is being
compiled, whereto only the text of these reports (with no formatting) will
be sent. If you would like to be on that list or if you do receive the
layout enhancements I am using despite having a non-AOL server and have
received the text version unnecessarily, please let me know via e-mail to:
Thank you and if there is any other way I can make this project more helpful to or enjoyable for you, please, don't hesitate to inform me therewith!

Well known Georgist, Bob Jene has formed a new organization in conjunction with his upcoming presentation at the World Futurist Convention on July 20 at the Chicago Hilton and Towers. He will be speaking there on problems with the income tax.
The name of his organization is "Land/Scape." In his logo he has added the phrase, "Escape the tyranny of the land." The focus of his effort is a proposal to replace the income tax with land value taxation.

Congratulations, Bob! Good going!
Look for all the details surrounding this story in the next edition of The Inter-Georgist News "http://www.kroyer.com/gns/" scheduled to go out in approximately two weeks. Please forgive the delay in our provision of these important details.
Way to go, Ben! Georgists, take note; you, too, can do such things! Just try; you might be surprised at what happens!
Look for a review of the aforementioned book, *Going Local*, at The Progress Report on Saturday, Aug. 8.
The 51st annual United Nations Department of Public Information Non- Governmental Organizations conference will be held at the UN Headquarters in New York, Sept. 14 - 16. Conferees will be observing the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The theme will be: "From Words to Deeds."
Any Georgists who would like to attend this free conference are very welcome to do so. You need only notify Alanna Hartzok that you wish to have your name put on the list by the forum. Keep in mind, however, that this list needs to be returned no later than July 31, so she must know beforehand. You will, of course, have to arrange for your own room, board and transportation.
There will also be a meeting of MPAN, the Millennium Peoples' Assembly Network during that NGO conference for plans for local to global forums in the year 2000, in which Mrs. Hartzok encourages all Georgists to involve themselves.
Major league stuff, people; the world is waiting for you!
Patrice McFarland, biographer of Elizabeth M. Phillips, requests your participation, ephemera, photos and artifacts in the presentation of an important part of Georgist history. If you know any "seasoned" Georgists who are not on the net, please print out the following and send it to them:
Anyone with firsthand or reliable second-hand knowledge OR ARTIFACTS about the following, PLEASE, make immediate contact with Patrice McFarland.
Thanks for helping Ms. McFarland with this important and exciting project!
In the 1960's, with campaign methods and wordings slightly modernised, William Pitt organised the campaigns that switched five of Melbourne's large outer suburbs to 'Site Value Rating' for their municipal revenues. As in Denmark it failed to lead on to the complete victory that we aim at and in recent years the gains have all been lost.
The recent Land Value Taxation Around the World, compiled by Dr. R. V. Andelsen and published by the Robert Schalkenbach Foundation - www.progress.org/books/ has a very useful segment by Ole Lefmann about what he calls "the fiasco" in Denmark. It shows that the Georgist organisation there was politically unprepared for the big campaign in the 1950's and was outsmarted by its well-funded opponents.
The campaign made all the usual 'Georgists' claims and promises but failed to say that many of the benefits, such as a lowering of land price, a consequential reduction in borrowings and hence in interest rates and a general improvement in rise and prosperity, would start to show up well before the introduction of the legislation itself.
Thus the government of the day was able to claim that conditions were improving because of its own common sense activities. In this way it belittled the Georgists and inferred that the proposed reform was quite needless - which of course it was not. This made it easy for them to wipe out the Georgists at the next election. It was a disaster from which Georgism there has yet to recover.
One lesson is our need to distinguish the task of our Georgean propagandists from that of the political candidates for whom they will be laying the ground work. Also necessary is a change from the old fashioned LVT wordings to the self explanatory and commercial terminology that will demand site rental revenues. Commerce, like money, speaks all languages.
Based on Mr. Pitt's experience in Melbourne and the Danish "fiasco," he has developed what he calls the "Eight Point Program", adherence to which he believes will aid the next Georgist political group which ascends to power.

A worthy supplication; we must learn from our mistakes if we are to succeed.
Speaking of Bill Pitt, it turns out he was a close compatriot of my grandfather, John L. Monroe, with whom he swapped a great deal of correspondence.
Mr. Pitt reports that Monroe's operations in Chicago were supported by the late Edgar Culley who established the Henry George Foundation of Australia.
I thank Mr. Pitt for this fascinating tidbit. I had no idea my grandfather was so closely connected with the Australian contingent!
